After Lok Sabha, the two agriculture bills have been passed in Rajya Sabha on Sunday amidst massive protest by the opposition. The bills passed on Sunday are – Farmer’s produce trade and commerce (promotion and facilitation) bill 2020, and the Farmer’s (empowerment and protection) agreement on price assurance and farm services bill 2020.
The opposition MPs raised slogans in the well of the house. Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh kept requesting the MPs to return to their seats. Eventually, he adjourned the proceedings of the house till 9 am the next day.
Dissatisfied with the response from Union agriculture welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, the opposition MPs reached to the chair of the deputy chairman. At the same time, TMC MP Derek O’Brien reached the well and showed the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan the house rule book. Proceedings of the house were interrupted for some time because of the protests.
Earlier, the MPs of opposition parties strongly opposed the two bills in the upper house as well. The bills were termed as a step against the interest of farmers and towards the benefit of corporates. However, both the bills have got approval from the Lok sabha.
Congress MP Ghulam Nabi Azad requested that Chairman must not extend the time for Rajya Sabha. Union Minister must respond the next day, as most members demand. But the government wants these bills to pass today.
Discussing the agricultural bills introduced in the Rajya Sabha, Trinamool MP Derek O’Brien said, “the Prime Minister said that the opposition is trying to mislead farmers. You promised to double farmer’s income by 2020. At the current rate, it will not happen before 2028.
After the proceedings, Direct O’Brien attacked the government on Twitter as well. He tweeted, “They cheated. They broke every rule in parliament. It was a historic day. In the worst sense of the word. The cut RSTV feed so the country could not see. They censored RSTV. Don’t spread propaganda. We have evidence.”
