A 19 year old Dalit girl was gang raped, tortured and eventually murdered four months ago in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras. Multiple severe injuries, including a serious one in her spinal cord, resulted in paralysis. Her tongue was cutoff. Officers of Uttar Pradesh police cremated the dead body of victim without the permission of her family members in midnight. For next 10 days after this gruesome incident, no arrests took place.
Not only this, a senior UP Police officer even claimed that no rape happened at all. Widespread protests took place across the country against the negligence of UP administration. The administration converted victim’s village into a cantonment area. The government deployed heavy security forces. The administration also stopped the media from interacting with the family members. They also barred the opposition leaders on their way to Hathras.
After four months yet again another horrendous incident has freshen up the reminiscences of Hathras Horror. People were shocked to see the dead bodies of two Dalit girls. The girls are relatives. Their bodies were discovered in their own fields. In barely alive condition, police found another girl with them in Unnao district’s Asoha. Police is denying the rumours that the girls were strangled till death or their hands were tied.
Unnao SP Anand Kulkarni informed that they have formed 6 police teams to investigate this incident. Apart from this, surveillance teams are also working. The statements of the surviving teenager and the postmortem reports of two dead girls are extremely essential for investigation. Everyone is waiting for both. Although prima facie the case seems to be death by poison, Mr. Kulkarni added.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the country. #Save_Unnao_Ki_Beti started trending on twitter. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked BJP led UP Government on twitter and expressed his solidarity with victims. He has assured that Congress party will continue to raise its voice for the downtrodden people.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of Delhi Commission of Women Swati Maliwal demanded immediate airlifting of victim to Delhi for better treatment.
Uttar Pradesh is in a transition phase from bad to worse when it comes to crimes against women. NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) also released a report in September 2019 on Crimes in India. In last four years crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh recorded an increase of 66.7%. In 2019 Uttar Pradesh solely recorded approximately 15% of all crimes against women in India.
Figures and horrible incidents like Hathras and Unnao have exposed BJP government’s inability to curb crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh. Condition becomes more deplorable when leaders of ruling regime indulge in crimes against women directly.
Back in 2017, in the same Unnao district, the court convicted BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar for the gangrape of 17 a year old girl. Another BJP MLA from Eastern Uttar Pradesh made controversial remarks amid protests against the negligence of UP Government over Hathras Incident. He claimed that rapes will stop once parents teach their daughters proper moral values.
UP Legislative Elections are not far away. If the BJP wants to retain Uttar Pradesh they have to take some conclusively productive steps to come clean on women’s safety issue.
