The new variety of COVID-19 virus is spreading rapidly in London and its surrounding areas. Due to this, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had to once again introduce nation wide lockdown in the country’s capital on Saturday. The government has also cancelled the exemption in restrictions during Christmas.

PM Johnson said, There is no evidence that this new variety of virus is less deadly than the actual virus or not. We can’t say if the vaccine will be less effective on it. We are less aware about this virus, so caution is needed.

Johnson announced the fourth tier of the COVID-19 alert system. It would cover the high risk towns and regions of England. London has been in the third tier, where the most stringent restrictions were in force. However, when the virus spread again, it was transferred to the fourth tier. The new restrictions will be effective from Sunday morning till 30 December.

In a TV message from Downing Street, the British Prime Minister said, “We still don’t know a lot. We know that this new virus is spreading rapidly, but we do not know whether it is fatal or not. Also, we do not know whether the vaccine will have an effect on this new virus.”

Johnson said, our experts will continue our work to improve our understanding of this new type of virus. So we are learning more about it. But we already know that we should take some drastic steps now.

“First of all, we will implement new restrictions in the most affected areas,” he said. Especially in parts of London, South East and East England areas that are currently in the third tier. These regions will enter a new fourth tier, roughly equivalent to the national restrictions that came into force in England in November.

Fourth tier restrictions will come into effect in London and South East England from Sunday morning, similar to the national lockdown. Under this ban, people will have to stay at home. There will be a restriction on leaving the house without any reason. There will be a ban on gyms, restaurants, yoga classes etc as well.
