Mercury 13 Pilot Wally Funk Becomes The Oldest Woman Astronaut

Wally Funk passed all the tests in NASA’s full male astronaut corps in the 1960s that her male peers had passed. But, she did not get a chance to go to space. 12 more women pilots faced the same fate along with her. However, now at the age of 82, her dream has come true.

With the completion of this space journey, Wally Funk has also become the oldest astronaut in the world. Bezos wrote in an Instagram post about this, ‘No one has waited so long. In 1961, Wally Funk was at the top of her class as part of the ‘Mercury 13 Women in Space Progress’.

Bezos wrote, ‘Despite completing training, the program was canceled and none of these 13 went to space. The time has come. Wally, welcome to the crew. Wally joined the crew as “Honored Guest”. She volunteered for this program.

The program started in February 1961. However, it was a privately funded effort. The purpose of starting it was to prepare women to fly in NASA’s space programs. In this 13 women got training and took the examinations were taken. Funk was the youngest woman to graduate from the program.
