ICMR holds Press Conference on the Pandemic Situation in India

The Union Ministry of Health and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) held a press conference on Tuesday regarding the status of COVID-19 global pandemic in the country. They told that there are 187 cases of UK strain of corona in the country. Meanwhile, India has delivered vaccines to 24 countries. Along with this, India has reported four cases of South African strain as well.

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said that India has administered 87 lakh 40 thousand 595 doses of vaccine in the country so far. 85 lakh 69 thousand 917 people received the first dose, while one lakh 70 thousand 678 people also got the second dose.


There are less than 1.40 lakh active cases of corona in the country. The cumulative positivity rate is 5.27 percent. Bhushan said that 72 percent of the total active cases in the country are from two states. These include Kerala and Maharashtra. Kerala has 61,550 active cases of corona infection, while Maharashtra has 37,383 cases. Bhushan said that in the last seven days the country reported 56 new cases per 10 lakh population.

The Union Health Secretary said that Rajasthan, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Tripura, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Lakshadweep have administered corona vaccine doses to more than 70 percent of health workers. Apart from this, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Tripura, Gujarat and Goa have given a second dose of vaccine to 60% of eligible health workers.

ICMR Director General Dr Balaram Bhargava was also present at the press conference. He said that as of today there are 187 patients with the UK strain of Corona in India. All confirmed cases have been quarantined and are undergoing treatment. Those who came in contact with them are in isolation and authorities are keeping an eye on them. He said that the vaccine we have is also capable of stopping the UK variants of Corona.

Dr. Bhargava further explained that ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) and NIV (National Institute of Virology) are trying to isolate and know about the type of corona virus found in South Africa. Four people returning from South Africa in India tested positive for this strain. All the passengers and the people in contact with them are in quarantine.

He said a case of Corona’s appearance in Brazil came to light in the first week of February. The virus strain was successfully isolated in ICMR-NIV culture. The prevalence of corona encountered in South Africa and Brazil is different from the one encountered in the UK. At the same time, Member (Health) of NITI Aayog, Dr. VK Paul said that India has sent the vaccine to 24 countries so far.
