With temperatures soaring above 30 degrees today, the sand and surf might seem like a good way to pass a few hours – but New South Wales Health Minister Brad Hazzard has a warning for beachgoers.

In a press conference today, Mr Hazzard said that “thousands of people” gathered at Sydney’s Bondi Beach yesterday, and many of them were ignoring the health and safety guidelines mandated by the coronavirus.

“We are in a different time,” he said.

“We need to behave in different ways and that is to keep your distance. The recommendation is at least 1.5 metres. That is a sensible recommendation that people should sensibly take on board.”

He said people were “by all means” to enjoy the beach and going outdoors, but to keep to the health guidelines.

He issued a similar warning to churchgoers.

“I had cause to be in a church just recently for a particular service and what I did notice in the church was that nobody seemed to be reminded of the need to socially separate and separate by the 1.5m,” he said.

“I would just say that it doesn’t matter where you are. Whether you are on Bondi or in a church, separate by 1.5m.”
