To grasp the message that Independence day brings along every year, a person has to be liberal in their understanding. Narrow minds can never enjoy the essence of Independence. Taking care of everyone and claiming to take care of everyone are two very different matters altogether. The moment people start realising the reality of government’s promises, they start feeling suffocated even in a free nation.
In such a situation, if they celebrate Independence day as Black day, then they cannot be blamed. The blameworthy is the system that forced them to take such a step. This year the Bhindranwale Federation, Dal Khalsa and Maan Akali Dal celebrated August 15 as Black Day in Amritsar. They raised pro-Khalistan slogans. These organisations expressed their anger because the constitution of the country gives them the freedom to do so.
The question of resentment among the Sikhs has been echoing in government corridors since decades. However, the governments never took it seriously. On the contrary, they kept using the sentiments of Sikhs for their interests. If some Sikh organisations are feeling agitated in the country, there are reasons for it. If time and again, Sikhs will be associated with Hinduism, it is natural that it will hurt their self-respect.
Even at the foundation stone ceremony of Ram Mandir, Prime Minister Modi said that Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, wrote a Ramayan. By saying this, Modi has hurt the religious sentiments of Sikhs. In this regard leader of Akali Dal, Jathedar Dhian Singh Mand said that Modi should apologise to the Sikh community for his statement. Dhyan Singh Mand was appointed Matawaji Jathedar of Shri Akal Takht Sahib by Sarbat Khalsa. It is difficult to say anything about the Prime Minister’s response in this regard. But his statement has created a wave of resentment in the entire Sikh community.
Sikhs all across the country have been protesting on this issue. Not only this, speaking Modi’s tongue, Giani Iqbal Singh, the former Jathedar of Takht Shri Patna Sahib also said that Sikhs are descendants of Lord Ram’s sons Luv and Kush. Thus, if there is resentment among the Sikhs, the government itself is responsible for it.If the leader of any country will speak against religion, it is obvious that the people will react. In a country where people of diverse faiths coexist, the situation becomes even more sensitive. One statement by someone can make the entire atmosphere bitter.
This is the reason because of which the Sikhs are demanding self-determination. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has been making the situation worse by repeatedly asserting that all countrymen are Hindus. This matter got into limelight when few Sikhs raised pro-Khalistan slogans, and the Shiv Sena opposed it.
The main reason behind hoisting the flag of Khalistan in Moga and Baba Bakala is also the constant tampering with the religious sentiments of Sikhs. Why did the government forget that the Sikh community has been at the forefront for country’s Independence, Indian borders and various other fronts? The Sikhs can never think negative about the country. They are still there to die for their country. However, the difference is the governments of the country have always tried to balance Sikhs on the scale of their own profit and loss.
