Novak Djokovic is officially out from the US open after he accidentally hit a line judge in the throat with the tennis ball.
As he walked for the changeover, trailing Pablo Carreno Busta 6-5 in the first set, Djokovic angrily smacked a ball behind him. The ball flew and hit the line judge who dropped to her knees at the back of the court.
During a discussion, Djokovic said, “Yes I was angry. I hit the ball which accidentally hit the line umpire. The facts are very clear, But it was not my intent. I did not do it on purpose. “The tournament referee Soeren Friemel who heard his case said even if he did not hit the Empire intentionally, she was hurt. And that was enough to merit the ruling.
The incident put an end to his 29 matches winning streak and bid for an 18th Grand Slam title. The US Tennis Association issued a statement stating that Friemel defaulted Djokovic “by the Grand Slam rulebook”. The USTA went on to say that Djokovic forfeits the ranking points and $250,000 prize money he earned in the tournament in addition to all other fines levied on him.
This year has undoubtedly been unfortunate for Djokovic. Earlier in June, he tested positive for coronavirus along with his wife, one of his coaches and a few other players. This was after he participated in a series of exhibition matches without social distancing in Serbia and Croatia.
As reigning US open champion Nadal did not participate because he was concerned about travelling during the pandemic and Federer was sidelined after two knee operations, Djokovic was expected to claim the trophy this year.
