Although there are hundreds of political parties in India, mainly there are only two of them that can govern in India. These are the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC). The INC or Congress has ruled the country for nearly six decades. While BJP led, NDA came to power for the second time a year ago.
Officially it might be called an NDA government, but in reality, it is a BJP Government. The BJP came into existence in 1980 and got only two seats in the 1984 elections. After that, there was no stopping for BJP. Today, it is the largest party in India. Veteran leaders like Lal Krishna Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee worked hard to rejuvenate the image of the party.
Then the party saw the arrival of Narendra Damodar Das Modi, a charismatic personality which tarnished the identity of all other leaders. The present government of India indeed has an NDA tag attached to it. Still, the charisma of Modi is so dominant that both BJP and the government are a mere representation of Modi. Modi is a leader who rose from the party. Now he is not only the face of the party but is also widely known across the world.
If we talk about Congress as an alternative, then there was a time when Congress was itself an inundation that swept away the British from the country. Whenever the nationalist movement and freedom struggle of India will be remembered, there will be a mention of Congress. But today, the same party is struggling to maintain its identity.
How the Congress of Indira Gandhi reached the margins today? Almost every Congressman knows the answer to this question. Recently, Congress Interim Chief Sonia Gandhi had a meeting with senior party leaders through video conferencing. Manmohan Singh, Ahmed Patel, Jairam Ramesh, Digvijay Singh and many other senior leaders attended the meeting.
The agenda of the meeting was Covid-19 pandemic and the political situation of the country. In the meeting, all the leaders suggested that Rahul Gandhi should lead the party again. They said Rahul Gandhi has been taking a front against the government on different issues. No other leader has been able to take strong stands against the government. Therefore, the situation demands Rahul Gandhi to be reinstated as the Party chief.
The unanimous stand of leaders in support of Rahul Gandhi undoubtedly indicates that there is no other leader in the party who can take a stand against the government. Still, will part’s image improve after reelecting Rahul as president? There are other questions related to Rahul Gandhi to be asked.
Rahul Gandhi’s candour is his most important quality. But this quality is meaningless unless it has a visible effect. It is necessary that Sonia and Rahul should be the chief of the party? Rahul’s re-emergence might not have an impact on the party’s image, but it will boost the morale of leaders who are close to him. Many leaders within the Congress are capable of changing the image of the party. People also respect them. But they will never get an opportunity because they do not come from the Nehru-Gandhi family.
The people who say that Rahul Gandhi is the alternative for Modi forget that Modi’s identity is his own. He is Narendra Modi. While Rahul gets his identity from the family, he was born. This entire scenario clarifies the fact that Congress can’t stand against the BJP until it expands the scope of its identity. There is an era beyond the mother and son.
